With the rapidly increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the United States, schools are forced to make a decision between sacrificing education quality and moving online, or choosing to reopen and risking the possibility of infection. In 2020, nearly 26 million students made the decision to move online; this transition reportedly worsened mental health, education, and motivation in these students [1,2]. However, with recent vaccine rollouts and the federal government's new plan on reopening schools, there has been a rise in the number of students attending in person learning [3]. Effectively monitoring COVID-19 cases and potential symptoms in students is key to reducing the spread of the virus within the school.

The goal of our work is to develop a mobile app to enable contact tracing within a school setting. In accordance with CDC’s social distancing rule, Xposure tracks the number and identity of the individuals that entered in a 6 foot radius of the user, allowing for accurate estimation on risk of exposure. In the event of a confirmed case, the user can report their status to Xposure, which will then notify those who they came in contact with. Additionally, the app contains a daily “symptom log”, where users can monitor their symptoms over time to mindfully evaluate whether they may have caught the virus.
